About

My research focus explores human behavior and computer mediated communications from a social psychological perspective. I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Southern Oregon University. I write about visual culture in an increasingly digital world. My research focuses on how digital technology challenges and transforms cultural expression through visual rituals, and routines. In addition, I contribute to journals and books on visual analysis and the role of the image in society.

In 2004, I completed my doctorate at the University of Oregon in Communication and Society. My dissertation addresses the transformation of photography from analog processes to digital technologies. My undergraduate degree is in journalism and my master’s degree is in English at Southern Oregon University. Prior to teaching and research, I worked as a correspondent and photojournalist for more than 20 years. During this time, my pictures have appeared in publications such as Maryknoll Magazine, PC World, NEA, the Miami Herald, New York Times, New York Daily News, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, Associated Press, San Antonio Express-News, San Francisco Chronicle, and others.

In December 2006, my blog "The Big Picture," was named by American Photo magazine as one of several innovators in 2006 who are changing the art and business of photography.

According to Jay DeFoore, editor at American Photo, "Through his blog, The Big Picture, Dennis Dunleavy has emerged as a recognized authority on everything from the use of cell phone cameras in the London subway bombings to the ethics of photo manipulation....His blog posts have attracted a wide international audience, and his writings have been translated into several languages."

The weblog (dennisdunleavy.com) gets about 2,000 hits a week. Sometimes other publications ask me to write for them and so this is how the following articles came into being. I believe we are entering into a whole new way of perceiving what scholarship should be about these days -- it's not just about the academy anymore.

Dennis Dunleavy’s Specialties:
Teaching, Writing, and Documentary Photography.
My research concerns the sociological and cultural dimensions related to visual routines in a digital age.

In January 2007, Dennis Dunleavy and David Burnett, two award-winning news photographers, showcased some of their photojournalism work at the Schneider Museum of Art at SOU to explore the veracity of news media images in the digital age.
